The Gum Rockrose (Cistus ladanifer) is a species of flowering plant in the family Cistaceae. It is a native of the westernMediterranean region. It is indigenous to Spain, Portugal and north-west Africa.

It is a shrub growing 1-2.5 m tall and wide. The leaves are evergreen, lanceolate, 3-10 cm long and 1-2 cm broad, dark green above and paler underneath. The flowers are 5-8 cm diameter, with 5 papery white petals, usually with a red to maroon spot at the base, surrounding the yellow stamens and pistils. The whole plant is covered with the sticky exudate of fragrant resin.

It is particularly well suited to the Continentalized Mediterranean climate, standing both long summer droughts and cold weather. It is an extremely invasive plant which has taken over much of former farmland and grasslands in the mountain regions of central Spain. In Spanish it is known as Jara pringosa meaning "sticky shrub".

Uses

It is a popular ornamental plant, grown for its strongly resin-scented foliage and conspicuous flowers. Its leaves yield a fragrant oleoresin known as labdanum, used in perfumes, especially as a fixative.

Esteva

A esteva (Cistus ladanifer) é uma espécie de planta com flores da família Cistaceae. (Nome comum: Esteva; Estêva; Ládano; Lábdano; Roselha; Xara).

É nativa da parte ocidental da região mediterrânica, crescendo espontaneamente desde o sul de França a Portugal e no noroeste de África. O nome do género da esteva - Cistus - tem a ver com o facto de os seus frutos serem cápsulas globosas com 7 a 10 compartimentos. Etimologicamente vem do grego "ciste", que significa caixa, cesto.

É um arbusto que atinge 1-2,5 m de altura e de largura. As folhas são persistentes, lanceoladas, com 3-10 cm de comprimento e 1-2 cm de largura, verde escuro na face superior e mais claro na inferior. As flores têm 5-8 cm de diâmetro, com 5 pétalas brancas finas, normalmente com um ponto vermelho a castanho na base de cada uma, rodeando os estames e pistilos amarelos. Toda a planta apresenta-se recoberta com um exsudado de resinaaromática.

Utilizações

É uma planta ornamental popular, cultivada devido à sua folhagem aromática e belas flores.

O ládano

As folhas libertam uma resina aromática, o ládano ou lábdano, usado em perfumes, especialmente como fixador.

O epíteto específico da esteva "ladanifer" vem do facto de ela produzir a resina denominada ládano cuja abundância lhe permite competir com outras espécies visto que parece inibir o crescimento destas - esta estratégia é denominada alelopatia. A resina serve também para proteger a planta contra adissecação.

Existe um método de colheita de lábdano muito curioso. Utiliza-se rebanhos de cabras que se colocam a pastar em zonas de grande densidade de esteva. De seguida, penteam-se o pêlo e barba dos animais para recolher a resina. O resultado final consistia numa resina, o (ládano), actualmente é utilizada na perfumaria como fixador de perfumes.

Amato Lusitano empregava o óleo como unguento.

A dream, which finally came true when in July ‘97 he started the construction together with 8 locals in the fishing village Câmara de Lobos.

Porto Moniz is a town located in the northwestern part of the Madeira Islands. It is located W of Santana, W of Machico, and WNW of Funchal. It is linked with a road linking to Santana and to Funchal via Calheta.

The main source of industry are agriculture and fishing while a small number of businesses are in the downtown area.

Porto Moniz has a few schools, a few lyceums, a gymnasium, banks, a post office, a small port, beaches and squares or plazas (praças). It also has a large open-air swimming pool (piscina), which has been mostly formed out of natural rock pools.

Porto Moniz seen from the montainsThe parish has a population of 1,700 in 2001, its density is 81/km² and the area is 21 km². The parish includes the small settlement named Santa Maria Madalena west on the main road. The parish is southesat of Ponta do Tristão which is the northernmost point on the island. The elevation near the point is 332 m. A few hilltops are located southeast. The highest point is around 900 to 1,000 m. Ribeira da Janela which is one of the longest streams in all of Madeira is almost 2 km ESE. The mountain slopes are southward and forests are in the southern part. A small stream is located to the southwest. Farmlands are around Porto Moniz and Santa Maria Madalena.

Funchal, population 100,526[1], is the capital of the Madeira Islands of Portugal. Funchal is also the largest city on the islands and with its neighbouring boroughs has over 150,000 inhabitants.

Funchal is located in a unique area; the natural geological features form an "amphitheatre" surrounding the city, which begins at the harbour and rises almost 1200 metres high on gentle slopes. This provides a natural shelter and was what attracted the first settlers.

Madeira's capital for more than five centuries, Funchal is said to have been named as such because of the abundance of fennel (funcho - in Portuguese) that was growing there.

Part of Funchal Municipality are the Savage Islands one nature reserve 160 km (100 mi) South of Funchal.

Funchal is bypassed by a superhighway to the north east and southwest which accesses to Santa Cruz, the Madeira airport and Ribeira Brava.

It was founded by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1421 and was elevated to city status by King Manuel I of Portugal in 1508.

In the early 1400s, Álvaro Fernandes was the commander of Funchal.

In the 16th century Funchal was important as a stopping place between the Indies and the New World, and was known as a wealthy place. It was also the port for Madeiran sugar and wine.

Também conhecida por Igreja das Chagas do Salvador, que, segundo consta das obras da época terá sido fundada por el rei D. Afonso Henriques.
No século XVII, o templo encontrava-se bastante degradado, então, Filipe II toma medidas para que seja restaurado, e para angariar fundos, dá inicio a uma feira em 1620, que iria suportar os seus custos até 1834, a tão conhecida Feira de Castro, que ainda hoje é a maior do Baixo Alentejo.
Após muitas modificações no edifício, continuam a merecer destaque os óleos de Diogo Magina (1763-67), representando o "Milagre de Ourique" com a aparição de Jesus Cristo ao Rei D. Afonso Henriques, no local de S. Pedro das Cabeças (situado a 5 Km da vila de Castro Verde).
O templo é constituído por uma só nave, é interiormente forrado de pequenos azulejos em azul, com flores, aves, moinhos, etc., de fabrico Holandês.

TWO CITIES, ONE RIVER

"The two cities of Oporto and Vila Nova de Gaia face each other from opposite sides of the Douro river - Oporto in the north bank and Gaia in the south. Six Pontes, or bridges, in total, join them. Of those, Ponte Dona Maria and Ponte Dom Luís, the two oldest ones, were built in the 19th century, respectively by Gustave Eiffel and by his partner in business, Théophile Seyrig. Ponte da Arrábida, Ponte de São João and Ponte do Freixo date from the 20th century, while the newest one, Ponte Infante Dom Henrique, is no older than the 21st century.

Being one of the oldest cities in Europe, Oporto is proud of its well preserved historical quarter and was awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 1996. Oporto and Gaia are further connected by the famous Oporto wine, traditionally stored in wine cellars that over the years have been built in Gaia and act as a magnet for tourists visiting Northern Portugal. There stand the names of the English families that left their wine making mark in the Douro region over the centuries: Taylor, Sandeman, Graham or Croft, to name but a few.

Fine wine and the Douro River may be the lifeblood of the two cities, but visitors will also benefit from a widely varied cultural offer. The Serralves Foundation with its vast collection of contemporary art and amazing gardens, the House of Music - a multidisciplinary place where you can listen to great music and much more -or Oporto Cathedral, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, are some of the unmissable features north of the river. Also worth mentioning, on the south margin, are the Grijó Monastery (16 th/17th century), the Serra do Pilar Monastery (16th century) or Casa Barbot, a unique example of the Art Nouveau style in the city."
